How to get rid of aphids naturally

One thing I see with my garden is aphids. My mustard greens do not stand a chance when it comes to an army of aphids setting up camp and strategically planning to attack any new mustard greens sprouting or any new plants. That burns me up so bad. I had some killing my cilantro. For a while, I didn’t know what to do but watch them die slowly. My go-to solution was, ask mom.

 

She recommended for me to spray them down with strong jets of water. Well, that works but they come back the very next day. And if it’s two armies then some will hold on to dear life and survive the blast. Or use my hands and wipe them away. Eww, no way! Too many yellow, green bug squirting on my hands.

 

I’ve done so much research after research and I must say there are some very clever ideas. Some suggested using duck tape. Placing a piece of double-sided tape near the plants. Some, even have their own organic ways of dealing with aphids. I have to boil this and that, leave it to cool, then pour in into a spray bottle and go on an aphids elimination spree.

I’m stubborn I want to use what I have in my house to get rid of these armies in my garden. And I want to use it now.

My poor papaya tree is being attacked right this minute and I don’t have time to be boiling things.

This is the ingredients that I use

• Dish soap (any)
• water
• spray bottle
• Gloves (optional)

That’s it. And if you don’t like touching them then wear some gloves. I like the thin ones because I want to feel what I’m touching. I want to feel if I’m ripping off my plants or just the bugs. But thick enough that if I touch a green worm I don’t get freaked out. I’m terrified of anything with no arms or legs! Yikes!

Fill the spray bottle with 3/4 water, then 1/4 liquid soap dish. Turn it upside down for a couple of seconds bring is back up wait a couple of seconds for the suds to subside. Repeat two more times. Make sure it’s well mixed. You don’t want to shake it because it’ll have too many suds. There you’re ready to go battle.

I wear gloves I don’t like bug juices on my fingers. It’s kinda gross. I did that the first time and I used up the soap water on myself rather than on the plants itself. It’s like, oh my gosh, I got bugs on my fingers, have to wash it off with the spray bottle. Yep, the one I was going to use for the aphids.

You’re all geared up, ready for the aphid war. Spray the soap water on them and when it starts to sud up rub them off, gently. You don’t want to harm the plant. You just want to get the aphids.

After that just keep an eye out for them sneaky scouts. I only did it once on my papaya tree while it was still growing. I checked it again in a couple of days and the aphids were gone.

Next, the mustard greens. Same process. It’s only soap so it wouldn’t harm the vegetables. And you can harvest immediately. No waiting a week before eating. Don’t forget to spray underneath the leaves too.

The Best Part

The best part about using just soap water is there’s no waiting for weeks before harvesting like the smelly bug spray at the store. You can harvest right after the soap spray because it’s just soap. And you can use it as much as you like.

Just be sure to rinse the vegetables well before using them. Unless you like to make bubbles with your mouth then I guess it’s fine too, but I highly do not recommend it.

There’s a lot of people out there that had used this method and are very unhappy because they came back and said, “I did what you said and my basil plant is weltering!”

You guys if you must use mild soap and only a quarter. 60z of mild soap and 26oz bottle. (200ml soap to 800ml spray bottle.)

Too much can strip off the natural defenses of the plants. The only way for the plants to recover is to wait for it to grow back.
